AMD provides update on Spectre and Meltdown patches

Viernes, 12 Ene, 2018

An afternoon recap of the day's most important business news, delivered weekdays. We are working closely with them to correct an issue that paused the distribution of patches for some older AMD processors (AMD Opteron, Athlon and AMD Turion X2 Ultra families) earlier this week.

As the firm had previously stated, these figures show that its latest (8th-gen) processors - running on a PC with an SSD - show a maximum 6% performance hit. Until Microsoft resolves the issue, they have put a temporary halt to the security patch on affected AMD systems.

Senators Jack Reed, a Rhode Island Democrat, and John Kennedy, a Louisiana Republican, have requested that the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Justice Department investigate the stock sale. The rest is to be finished by January end.

GPZ Variant 3 (Rogue Data Cache Load or Meltdown) is not applicable to AMD processors.

The architecture flaws first came to light for vendors in mid-2017. The flaws ensnared many chip companies, including SoftBank Group Corp.'s ARM Holdings, Advanced Micro Devices Inc. and Nvidia Corp.

Apple users need to update their computers, mobile devices and even Apple TVs with MacOS 10.13.2, iOS 11.2 and tvOS 11.2, respectively. The company has said that operating system patches alone will address the Spectre bounds check bypass bug. To accelerate the security of the entire industry, we commit to publicly identify significant security vulnerabilities following rules of responsible disclosure and, further, we commit to working with the industry to share hardware innovations that will accelerate industry-level progress in dealing with side-channel attacks. The updates are separate from patches produced by operating system companies such as Microsoft Corp.

The company said it would make optional microcode updates available for Ryzen and Epyc CPUs starting this week, with updates for older processors due to arrive in the 'coming weeks'.

SPARC-using Fujitsu, meanwhile, has published advice (PDF) revealing how it will address the twin bugs in its servers and PCs, and also saying its SPARC systems are "under investigation". The company says Windows 10 users shouldn't notice much of a difference.

What systems require patching for vulnerabilities? All of the major browsers have already created updates to patch this flaw, so there is nothing to wait for here.

"They are not affected by these security issues". HP is set to launch the Spectre X360 15-inch design very soon, with the official announcement today.
