157 new emoji are coming this year

The Birdman just announced he's helping create the 2018 skateboard emoji with Unicode.

The gripe must've gotten back to Unicode ... because a few minutes later Hawk updated his fans to let them know that he's now involved with correcting the travesty before it debuts in June. People working for Apple, Google, Facebook and Microsoft all participate in the emoji subcommittee. Sam Eckert, the developer of cryptocurrency app Bittracker, was alerted last week that the latest version of his app wouldn't be approved unless he removed several emoji symbols from his app's interface and App Store screenshots.

"Apps are NO LONGER ALLOWED TO USE EMOJI in non-keyboard based situations", writes Eckert, who says he spoke with Apple's App Store review team about the issue. Emoji experts, such as Emojipedia editor Jeremy Burge, also participate. I've been writing about emojis for a while, and I got comment about the lack of red hair every single time.

A labcoat, hiking boot and fire extinguisher are also among the 157 new emojis to have made the cut.

For food lovers, there'll be cupcake, mango, salt shaker and bagel emojis.

When it comes to smiley faces, there will be a smiling face with three hearts, a hot face, a cold face, a dizzy face and a pleading face. The specifications of Unicode 11.0 are still a draft.

The illustrations for the new Emoji, listed on Unicode's site, are not finalized (that's up to the different developers), but you can get a good idea of what they will look like here at the organization's page, or in the above video, created by Emojipedia.

A llama, peacock and parrot will join those already nestled away in the animal section.
